Perceptual Differentiation:
In contrast to traditional recognition tasks, differentiation tasks
involve searching for percepts that discriminate important control contexts
in narrow and specific circumstances. The objective is to support optimal
control rather than to recognize the elements of a fixed data set. As s result,
recognition is hierarchical and is based on many, time-varying
distinctions in redundant data streams.
